Chubby White’s Variety Night

This crazy, multi-themed, live variety show ran for 3 years with 7-10 monthly shows each year in Bristol before becoming a show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019. I made theme songs, soundscapes, FX, voice overs, underscore playlists, and with my writing partner, Jamie Maier produced full length musical numbers. There were tight deadlines so all the audio was written, created and mixed within 3 days for each show.

I started off working as a DJ between the acts and ended up performing in the shows as well as triggering sounds and mixing the stage sound. There were 30-60 sound cues per show. Here are my favourite from the whole adventure.

e-Magination

Introducing the e-Nfinity headset by e-Magination.

For one show we created a 90s VR brand, e-Magination. I made the audio idents and fx for the brand and put together this advert from my own footage and some 90s YouTube vids. The song here is Cybernetic Love by Casco and I recorded the voice-over. I processed the whole thing through an old 90s sampler to give it a nostalgic feel.

Songs & Backing Tracks

90s video game music, dystopian national anthems, psychedelic acid trip music

Sound FX

These were the last thing I would have to make in the process for the show. I would get to 4am the night before and read in the script: “SFX: Spacetime warps around Spargax’s neck” and be like, ‘okay then’.

Voice Overs

Chubby White’s live sound was practically built on voice overs. They developed over the 3 years of doing them from simple stories into full blown heist montages and space diaries. The underscores I used are some of my favourite tracks from through the decades.

The Jingle

‘It should be something really dumb like this’ I said before playing it once and never changing it. What started as an idea for a single audio sting became the opening to every show. The jingle took on a different style every show according to the theme.
